What all this comes down too is that with the fast growing adoption of digital formats like MP3, AVI, DivX and our super speedy broadband mediums for sharing these files, there is no-longer a need for physical formats like CD, DVD or Blue-Ray. All of our Music and Video entertainment can be now be comfortably streamed and shared over the Internet. CD's, CD players and music stores are already practically history thanks to the iPod and iTunes and other MP3 sharing services. Now it's time for the DVD to follow suite and bow out gracefully. My sister was looking for movies to rent on New Years Eve, but due to they're local Block Buster closing down, she settled for Rogers On-Demand...
This of course is an unfortunate consequence for the manufactures like LG, Samsung, Sony and many others that produce these players but you can be sure they're looking forwards to the next gen digital devices that can deliver this medium to your living room.
Such products already exist and will only gain momentum as time goes on...Smart TV's, Set top boxes and services like Netflix which can stream movies over your Xbox or Playstation3. I myself like t use Bit-Torrent sites to download TV shows and Movies and then stream them via 'Air Server' over my iPod Touch to my Flat Screen TV. I look forward to the day when I can subtract the iPod Touch from the equation and stream everything from my Smart TV. That day is coming sooner then u think...
