I myself purchased a Sony pocket e-reader last Christmas. Because of this ultra-cool device, I now only read books in digital format. No exceptions! (I've since switched to the Kobo app on my tablet). My reasons for switching to this format were functionality and portability. Late last year my wife bought me Kieth Richards bio 'My Life' in hard cover. A couple of chapters in, I was really enjoying the book when I had to travel to Winnipeg for Loblaw business. Now, I don't know if you've ever seen this book in hard cover but it's MASSIVE and there's no way I was going to cram this thing in my carry on.
Thus, it came to me that it was time to go digital, as I'm an avid reader, I travel allot, and I'm running out of space in my book shelves. Based on this criteria, the choice was simple....especially based on the facts; slim & light makes them easy to travel with, excellent battery life since there's limited functions that tax the microprocessor and memory space (1 e-reader = 10,000 books).
Although the e-reader is a winner with me, others still prefer the tactile feel of a physical book, such as my Mother in-law who received a Kobo e-reader last Christmas and has yet to power it on...
That being said, the modern e-reader is still an excellent 'real' book substitute with low cost models that display B&W text and are just for reading and more expensive colour models that can surf the web, email, games and other stuff (as well as reading).
So whether your in the market for a slick new e-reader or u still prefer the classic book with ink & paper and real bookmarks, I still have have to decide if I should buy one for my tech challenged Mom this Christmas and if she can handle it...
