I was told recently by a colleague about the new BlackBerry mini keyboard and how when RIM released it via online purchase, it had sold out in a day. Needless to say, as an avid Playbook user I was very curious.
After doing a little research on the web, I learnt that 'The Source' would be selling them exclusively for $99 or u could order them online from RIM for $120. Being the impatient type, I contacted my locale Source store and they had four of them in stock. However by the time I made my way over to the store on a Monday afternoon, they had sold them all. I contacted a few other Source stores I frequent regularly only to get the same spiel..."were all sold out but u can order online if u like". This response and lack of in-store stock annoyed me and I decided to hold off on purchasing the keyboard for awhile. It's not like I actually need the mini keyboard because I've been getting along just fine with out one, but I take allot of notes on my playbook during meetings and I thought a keyboard might come in handy. (I'm always looking for that technical edge that will make me more efficient at what I do).
This all took place like two weeks ago, so last Friday I stopped in The Source to pick up a GPS holder for my SUV and I just happened to ask one of the sales guys if they had any of those BlackBerry mini keyboards. Well low and behold, they had like five in stock. I checked it out, held one in my hands, and decided to give it a try...
Once I got it home and unpacked it, I immediately tried to pair it with my Playbook via Blue-tooth to give it a spin. Pairing it proved very difficult and not intuitive at all. I even watched a YouTube video to see how it's done. I did finally get it paired and then proceed to get a feel for the KVM navigation.
It really does feel a little laptopish when it's in the case standing up paired with the mini keyboard and touch pad. The kick stand on the back is weak though and the keys on the keyboard are tiny. Also, scrolling and navigating is a little tricky and takes some getting used to. The case with your Playbook and keyboard combined makes carrying the whole package a little bulky.
All and all, I had read similar remarks from other online reviews. I guess if your doing allot of mobile email and document writing, the keyboard would come in handy and it does give u that extra screen space. But for me, I just wasn't feeling it...returned it the next day.
Sorry RIM:(
