People falling for Microsoft virus scan, police say

By Charlene Close

A Microsoft anti-virus phone scam is making the rounds in the GTA and many people are falling for it.

Nationally, last year, more than 2,000 people fell for it losing almost half-a-million dollars.

You answer the phone and on the other end of the line is someone claiming to be from Microsoft, offering to help you rid your computer of malicious software.

This scam has become so prevalent the Toronto police have issued a public safety alert.

"Sometimes the scam artists are really good at what they do, detective Al Spratt told 680News.

Spratt said to assume it's a scam unless you can prove otherwise.

"Don't provide any information to someone that calls you, especially when it's an unsolicted call. Ask the caller for their info. If they're a legitimate business, they should be willing to give it to you, he explained.

The Canadian anti-fraud centre says the virus scam accounts for between 70 and 80 per cent of the daily complaints it gets.
